‘Reach for the Stars’ at Soho House

May 4, 2009

To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, there will be a special ‘Reach for the Stars’ event at Soho House Museum on Monday 4th May.

The event is taking place at Soho House as part of the Matthew Boulton 2009 bicentenary as, amongst his many interests; Boulton was a keen astronomer and used to observe the night sky from the roof.

Visitors to the free event will be able to enjoy a fascinating family fun day of astronomical activities that will include the chance to view the sun through solar telescopes, enjoy ‘Planetarium’ shows and take rooftop tours of Soho House.

The event at Soho House is one of many organised this year to recognise the bicentenary of Matthew Boulton’s death.   Soho House is also showing the exhibition ‘200 years in the Making: Celebrating Boulton in Contemporary Style’ which is in conjunction with Sutton Coldfield and Matthew Boulton Colleges.  On 25 March at Soho House there will be ‘Soho in Steam’ which will includes a working traction engine in steam, a miniature railway to ride on in the garden & working steam models from the Birmingham Society of Model Engineers plus a special visit from Matthew Boulton! .

This year marks the International Year of Astronomy, which recognises the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope to study the night sky.  The ‘Reach for the Stars’ event has been organised with Birmingham Astronomical Society who have a full programme of events throughout the year.
