Birmingham Inner Circle Credit Union
The Birmingham Inner Circle Credit Union was set up in 1987, and has played a key role in the city’s local anti-poverty strategy. Its aims have been to bring relevant banking services to people from all sections of the community, many of who may be excluded from other financial options and forced to use exploitative credit.
The credit union is a member-owned and democratically accountable financial co-operative that aims to improve the economic well-being to each of its members. It increases the area of choice in saving and borrowing for the individual, and generates greater spending power in the local economy, so assisting in community regeneration. It is regulated by a number of pieces of legislation and by the financial Services Authority.
